What is Shirodhara

Shirodhara is a specific therapeutic technique within Ayurveda that involves continuously pouring a thin thread of warm oil on the patient's forehead. The term 'Shirodhara' comes from Sanskrit, where 'shiro' means 'head' and 'dhara' refers to 'continuous flow'.

The Shirodhara procedure involves positioning the patient in a supine position with the head slightly tilted back. The therapist will adjust the height of a special vessel suspended above the patient's forehead so as to allow a slow and steady flow of warm oil to flow over the forehead at a specific point called the 'ajna chakra' or 'third eye'.

Characteristics of the Shirodhara technique

Continuous flow of hot oil: Shirodhara involves the continuous pouring of a thin thread of warm oil onto the patient's forehead. This constant flow helps induce a deep state of relaxation and tranquility.

The "ajna chakra" or "third eye" point: The oil is directed to flow on the specific point called the "ajna chakra" or "third eye". This point is located between the eyebrows at the forehead and is considered to be an important energy centre in Ayurveda.

Customised oils: The oil used in Shirodhara is selected according to the individual constitution (dosha) of the patient and the desired therapeutic purpose. Oils may be mixed with herbs or aromatic essences such as lavender, rose or jasmine to enhance the therapeutic effects.

Scalp and upper body massage: Shirodhara is often combined with gentle scalp and upper body massage to enhance relaxation and therapeutic effects. These gentle movements can help release tension and create a more complete experience of relaxation.

Benefits of the Shirodhara technique
