What is Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu massage is a form of manual therapy that originated in Japan. The term 'shiatsu' literally translates as 'finger pressure' in Japanese. This technique is based on the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, in particular the concept of meridians or energy channels through which vital energy called 'ki' or 'chi' flows.

Shiatsu massage can be called "acupuncture without needles". During a Shiatsu massage, the therapist applies pressure with fingers, palms, elbows or knees to specific points along the body's energy meridians. These points are called "tsubo" or "pressure points" and are located on the surface of the skin. The pressure applied to these points is intended to correct energy imbalances and stimulate the body's natural healing ability.

Features of Shiatsu Massage

The main features of Shiatsu massage are:

Using pressure and fingers: Shiatsu massage involves applying pressure with the therapist's fingers, palms, elbows or knees to key points along the body's energy meridians. This pressure is applied in a specific and controlled way to stimulate energy flow and release built-up tension.

Energy meridians: Shiatsu massage is based on the concept of meridians or energy channels in traditional Chinese medicine. The therapist focuses on these meridians and associated pressure points to restore the body's energy balance.

Individualisation: Each person has their own energy imbalance and specific needs. The Shiatsu therapist assesses the client's overall condition and tailors the treatment to address their specific issues. In this way, Shiatsu massage is personalised and tailored to individual needs.

Whole body treatment: Shiatsu massage doesn't just focus on a specific area of the body, but the whole body. By stimulating the meridians and key pressure points throughout the body, the aim is to restore the flow of energy throughout the system.

Combination of techniques: In addition to finger pressure, Shiatsu involves other techniques such as rotating and stretching joints, stroking and kneading. This combination of techniques aims to relax the muscles.

Benefits of Shiatsu Massage

Relaxation and stress reduction: Shiatsu massage helps release tension and stress built up in the body, allowing you to deeply relax and recover your energy. It can improve sleep quality and reduce stress-related symptoms such as anxiety and fatigue.

Relief from pain and discomfort: By applying pressure and manipulating tense areas and pressure points, Shiatsu massage helps reduce muscle aches, back pain, neck tension and other types of physical discomfort. It can also relieve headaches and migraines.

Improved blood circulation: The pressure and manipulation techniques of Shiatsu massage help to stimulate blood circulation in the body, promoting the transport of oxygen and nutrients to tissues and organs. This can help speed up the healing process and improve the function of the cardiovascular system.

Boosting the immune system: By activating energy flow and reducing energy blockages, Shiatsu massage can support the body's immune system. This helps to increase resistance against disease and maintain better overall health.

Improve flexibility and mobility: The stretching and manipulation techniques used in Shiatsu massage help to relax and release muscles and joints, increasing the body's flexibility and mobility. Shiatsu massage can be beneficial for people with musculoskeletal conditions such as joint stiffness or postural problems.

Energy balancing: Shiatsu massage focuses on restoring the flow of energy in your body by stimulating meridians and pressure points. It helps to balance the physical, mental and emotional aspects of a person, promoting well-being and overall harmony.
